Grow Your Own Vegetable Garden

Our “Grow Your Own Veggie Garden” series, led by our Executive Director, Lana Mustafa, empowers budding gardeners with the knowledge and skills to plant and grow thriving gardens and homesteads. Lana (@thisbeelana) has spent the last 18 years transforming her 50x100’ property into a thriving homestead, growing a fruitful veggie garden, berries, fruit trees, and raising children, chickens, and bees!

You’ll learn all about soil health and ensuring your soil is nutrient-dense, how and where to plant your crops, how to prune your veggies, how to identify and prevent pests and disease, and more!  We'll also share our favorite resources to expand your learning and provide plenty of time after each class to get all your individual questions answered. 

The series costs $225 and includes seven 45-minute presentations followed by Q&A and a “starter pack” of 10 organic seedlings grown by us in the Van Vleck House & Gardens greenhouse ($70 value) to get your garden started!

Meetings will be held via Zoom weekly on Saturday mornings at 10 am, with 1 pre-recorded session offering on March 28th, and two in-person workshops on March 21st and May 2nd (in Montclair).

Class Schedule:

  • *March 21: Garden basics: knowing your growing zone, identifying your own growing needs and goals. Seed Starting 101- (In- Person)

  • *March 28: Soil biology: soil structure and composition, understanding the soil food web. Pre-recorded

  • April 4: Soil amendments: understanding the key components of fertilizer and compost.

  • April 11:  Disease and pest management: identify, prevent, and treat diseases and pests.

  • April 18: Crop planning: what to plant where, when, and how.

  • April 25: Maintaining your garden: learn about pruning, trellising, irrigation best practices, and harvesting

  • *May 2: Compost: learn how to start your compost system and why. And, Plant sale pick up, and Q&A with Lana (In- Person)

Dates marked with “*” will be pre-recorded and emailed to you OR in-person. No live Zoom will be held on these dates.
